What I like best about Rhino Food is their “ready-to-eat” foods. They prepare egg rolls, colored tapioca pearls desserts, spring rolls and other snacks and appetizers fresh every day. I would recommend heading there for these goodies early in the morning since everything is in packages. Towards the afternoon, the foods get cold, soggy, dried and not as tasty.

I do have to say, though, despite my like for their ready-to-eat foods, I’m not a fan of their products and fresh produce. Many of their items cost a lot more than other oriental stores’. The aisles are also very small and things are randomly placed on the floor, making it difficult to move around with a shopping cart. For Asian ingredients and fresh veggies, I would rather go to Viet Hoa.

I enjoy shopping at Viet Hoa when I visit Milwaukee. In addition to its wide selection of products, Viet Hoa also has cooked, wrapped spring rolls and meat and taro-filled buns. The customer service here is not the friendliest, but if customer service is not too important to you, it’s not a bad store for Asian ingredients and goods. Below are two customer reviews of Viet Hoa:

Butcher, Asian vegetables, seafood, tons of sauces, rice, noodles and more. Our family frequents this shop for food supplies. Not the best in decor but the goods are usually fresh and that’s the most important.‎
“Great selection”‎

Viet Hoa is a great grocery store for finding any ingredient you need to make Asian food. I just went there looking for some curry paste to make a few Thai dishes, and came out with all sorts of interesting items. They also have a great selection of sauces, noodles and snacks. Finally, they have an in-store butcher, so you can get some of those hard to find cuts such as pork belly. I would highly recommend.‎

Super Deal Asian Oriental Food is owned by Chue Hue and Chao Thao and has been opened since June of 2008. The store offers a wide selection of Asian goods ranging from fresh to frozen produce and top brand condiments, noodles, snacks, rice, drinks and much more. Super Deal is family operated, but unlike other oriental stores, its owners strive for 100% customer satisfaction and always greet their customers with a warm smile. In addition, Chue and Chao Thao are eager to assist their customers with any questions they may have. They offer tips on using and cooking with specific ingredients and products that they sell and make sure that customers find what they were looking for.

I highly encourage all of you, who live near the Fox Cities area, to make a stop at Super Deal for your next Asian groceries. The prices there are good, quality of product is genuine and outstanding customer service!

Woodman’s Food Market

I like shopping at Woodman’s for my fruits, vegetables and drinks. To me, Woodman’s is one of those stores where I would go in intending to only purchase a few things, but end up purchasing a lot more. Not that this is a bad thing, because Woodman’s prices are very good, including those of some of their oriental goods. Woodman’s Asian aisle has a pretty good range of products ranging from drinks to frozen dumplings and sauces. Their oriental drinks costs a few pennies less than at other oriental stores, but I do think some of their sauces costs a little more. If you happen to be at Woodman’s for oriental sauces, stick to Asian brands like Lee Kum Kee, Pantai, Kikkoman, Huy Fong Foods, Viet Huong, etc. The tastes of these sauces are a lot better than American imitations.

While I like Woodman’s, I would have to say that some of Woodman’s vegetables and herbs are extremely dirty. I used to purchase my white mushroom, eggplant, cilantro and green onions from Woodman’s but I’ve noticed many times that Woodman’s don’t clean their green onions well. There’s usually a lot of dirt (in the form of sand) inside the stalks of the green onions, where you can’t see them unless you finely chop the green onions up. Just beware that if you’re going to buy green onions from Woodman’s, you’re going to have to do more than just rinsing; you’ll have to slice the green onion stalks open in order to get all the dirt out. Green onions are usually $0.39-$0.59 a bunch and cilantros are around $0.59-$0.79, depending on the week, but if you have other places to get cleaner herbs, I would say avoid Woodman’s for them.

Asian Garden Market

Asian Garden Market is my frequently shopped “corner store.” I live just a few blocks down on Allen Blvd., so it’s very convenient for me to shop there, especially when I need ingredients fast. In addition to a gas station, Asian Garden Market has a good selection of oriental vegetables and fruits and other products. Their prices are reasonable and their vegetables are nicely organized and packed. One thing I love about this store is their ready-to-eat roast duck, crispy duck, barbecue pork, crispy pork and other authentic dishes that they make every day. If you like roast duck, I highly encourage you to try theirs. I don’t think the price per roast duck is bad, $14.95, considering the fact that Asian Kitchen on State Street charges over $20 for theirs (which I haven’t tried).

I like the prices here and I would have to say that this is my most preferred oriental store, especially when I’m planning to buy a lot of groceries. The owner and co-owners of this store travel to Chicago every Tuesday and Thursday, so the freshest fruits, vegetables and herbs are guaranteed almost every week. What’s neat about this store is that you can purchase items in bulk for less should you ever need to. Just let the owner or co-owners know about your order a week in advance and it will be ready for pick-up in a few days to a week. However, I do have to warn you that this store does smell a bit funny sometimes. I think the smell results from the fresh seafood that the store occasionally sell. If you can tolerate the smell, though, you’ll end up saving more money here than shopping elsewhere, say Woodman’s for oriental goods. This store carries a wide selection of goods ranging from fresh produce to frozen dumplings, shrimps, squids, fish and meatballs, spices, seasonings and oriental sauces, tapioca flour and much more. At this store, you’ll be able to find just about everything you need at reasonable prices.
